Radar status indicators tell you what the system is doing at a glance. Nose Cold is interpreted as the radar in its active operational state, meaning the transmitter is energized and the antenna is sweeping to scan the airspace. This is the normal mode for detecting and tracking targets, so Nose Cold points to the radar actively scanning.

If the radar were merely standby or powered down, there would be no transmission or scanning happening, and the indicator would reflect that non-operational state. In test mode, you’d expect diagnostic cues or a test pattern rather than the ongoing scanning status.
